Futsal Facts in New Zealand

Futsal isn’t just another indoor sport — it’s officially recognised by FIFA and NZ Football as part of the football family. Its growth has been extraordinary: from just 5,000 registered players in 2011 to around 29,000 in 2024, with more than 170,000 players across football and futsal combined nationwide. Nearly 9,000 secondary school students are already playing futsal, highlighting its strong pathway from youth into senior levels.

New Zealand has also made history on the global stage. In 2024, the Futsal Whites qualified for their first FIFA Futsal World Cup, while the Futsal Ferns booked their spot at the inaugural Women’s Futsal World Cup in 2025 after winning the OFC Nations Cup. As of September 2025, the Futsal Ferns are ranked 21st in the world, making them Oceania’s top women’s futsal team.
